Joel NR Powell is no stranger to the entertainment scene. He first emerged as a disc jockey by creating the popular sound system, a Jamaican term for DJ, Ninja Ryders Sound. Through his Ninja Ryders Sound brand, Joel worked as a DJ and hosted the internet radio program, The Layer Show, which was broadcasted from Toronto, Canada and was featured on the Los Angeles California network, sensimedia.net. The show generated over 20,000 plus listeners every Saturday. As his fan base began to grow, he went on to host over 200 promotional mixtapes that have circulated throughout North America, the Caribbean, and Europe.
His mixtapes featured music from both mainstream and independent recording artists. It became so popular that Billboard Award winning record label VP Records, joined forces with his Ninja Ryders Sound brand and had him created the official Alborosie and Friends mixtape. The mixtape featured Reggae stars such as Grammy award-winning Gramps Morgan, Grammy Award winning Black Uhuru, Ky-mani Marley the son of Bob Marley and many more. The mixtape has been streamed online over 255,000 times via VP Records Soundcloud page.
Joel has never been a man to place all of his eggs into one basket. He has continued his entrepreneurial endeavours by expanding, not only his ideas but his brand. As a graduate of Humber the Business School, Joel holds a diploma in Business Management. He is also the Author of the award-winning, self-help book Black Empowerment & Minority Issues. The 7 chapter book speaks in-depth about the adversity that visible minorities often face in today’s society. The book was given a well-received article write-up, featured in Toronto Life Magazine, which was written by acclaimed Canadian Journalist Jan Wong.
The book was later awarded best-selling, non-fiction title, an awarded given by renowned Canadian bookstore, Knowledge Book Store. Actress, Poet and Granddaughter of Reggae Icon Bob Marley, Donisha Prendergast, gave the book amazing praise “Great book…Give thanks for the insight.” It received many other positive reviews, one being from Hip Hop artist, Tech N9ne saying, "Keep writing those books Mr. Powell and may your future seeds carry on the tradition.” His book was chosen by the International Literacy Association (ILA) to be apart of International Literacy Day (ILD) which took place in 2016. It was designed to raise awareness and advance literacy in communities worldwide.
Following the great success of the book, an equally successful documentary based on the book was released, Empowerment through Awareness. The film featured exclusive interviews with police officers, financial planners, counsellors, doctors and more about issues centred on adversity; the film featured Dr. Joanne Thicke, aunt of R&B Singer Robin Thicke. The EP Soundtrack based on the book and film entitled “7 Issues EP” was all written and performed by Joel himself and featured Lil Eazy-E son of NWA founder Eazy-E. The EP has sold heavily across Canada and the US with units over 5000 plus & was archived in 2019 by Billboard music charts.
Along with holding the titles of DJ, Recording Artist, Author, and Entrepreneur, Joel has also been awarded the Robert Nesta Marley award, created in honour of the late Bob Marley. He received this award because of his contributions to the growth and awareness of African and Caribbean cultures from around the world. The award was given to him through the Friends for Life Ministry- Canada. Along with this honour, Joel has also appeared in several media outlets. Humber the Business School featured Joel in their inaugural issue magazine that discussed the success stories of business school graduates. He has also been featured in XXL Magazine, The Source Magazine, Zoosk.com, V103 Atlanta, 1380 WAOK CBS Radio, Vibe 105.5 FM Toronto & many more. Along with these achievements, he has been a keynote speaker for the University of Toronto, Lincoln Alexander Secondary School, Veterans Helping Veterans Riverdale Georgia, The Boys & Girls Club of Atlanta, Lester B. Pearson Collegiate and a host of other organizations. Joel has performed in two Canadian Tours with well-known Hip Hop Artists Tech N9ne and Jadakiss. He has also performed with Grammy nominated recording artist Angie Stone in 2018 at the Juneteenth Atlanta Parade & Music Festival where he was handpicked to be the first Canadian artist to ever perform on their stage.
Not forgetting his DJ roots in the entertainment industry, he was also nominated for best DJ at the 2015 Black Canadian Awards & in 2017 his Ninja Ryders Sound brand was declared the winners of the 2017 Jamaica Day Festival DJ competition; a competition that was held in front of over 10,000 people in his hometown of Toronto, Canada.
In 2018-2019 Joel created “The Book, The Film, The Soundtrack Tour” which consisted of over 200 plus book signings, film screenings/speaking engagements & performances throughout Georgia & surrounding states where he collaborated his brand with top-tier small businesses as well as corporate brands such as Starbucks, T-Mobile, Cricket Wireless & Subway Restaurants to host several events throughout the course of a year. The movement has just begun as Joel is on his way to becoming one of the greatest of all time.
